From late July into September the racetrack reorders everything. Via de la Valle backs up towards the fairgrounds, Jimmy Durante Boulevard runs at a walking pace, and Camino del Mar carries the overflow along the bluff. Outside those weeks the village is small and slow: two blocks of shops, the Plaza's terrace above the sea, and the 101 curling north past Torrey Pines State Beach.
Race season reshapes Del Mar
Meters run the length of Camino del Mar and the enforcement officer knows the pattern; the residential streets above carry permit restrictions that the signs explain badly. The 101 south of Del Mar climbs Torrey Pines Grade, which is slower than it looks behind a queue of beach traffic. L'Auberge and the Plaza share a small valet operation; on race days it fills by noon, and the fairgrounds lots become the practical alternative.
The run down to Del Mar
Del Mar goes in the diary a day out. The 5 south is a solid two hours to the Del Mar Heights Road exit, and a Friday in racing season adds to that, so the car leaves Los Angeles in the morning rather than on demand. Handover happens in the L'Auberge motor court, on a driveway off Stratford Court, or at the fairgrounds gate when the meeting is running. Which car for Del Mar
Opening day at the track is the one morning of the year when a Giallo Modena Ferrari SF90 Stradale blends in, and the valet line on Jimmy Durante will find room for it. Can you deliver in time for the first race at the track?
Yes, as long as the car is reserved a day earlier. Post time on a weekday is usually two o'clock, so the car leaves LA in the morning and is at the gate or the L'Auberge court with an hour to spare. Opening day and the Pacific Classic are the two dates worth booking further out, because the whole town is full.
Is there anywhere sensible to leave the car overnight in the village?
Meters along Camino del Mar stop in the evening, but the streets above — Tenth, Eleventh, the lanes behind the shops — are permit-only after dark, and that is the ticket writer's beat. Guests at L'Auberge and the Plaza use the shared valet. Anyone in a bluff-house rental should ask the owner which spaces actually belong to the property; those driveways are shorter than they look.
What is the minimum rental period?
One day. Daily, weekly and monthly rates, with long stays running month-to-month and no lock-in.
Is a credit card or a credit check required?
Neither. A valid licence and a deposit from $500 is all that is needed, and there is no minimum age or young-driver surcharge.
