Twenty-five miles an hour applies across the whole island, and Coronado's police enforce it on Orange Avenue with more patience than most visitors manage. The bridge lifts you high over the bay and sets you down on a flat grid of clapboard porches and Navy housing, with the Hotel del at the south end and the Silver Strand running eleven miles down to Imperial Beach.
Twenty-five miles an hour, island-wide on Coronado
Leaving the island at half past four is the daily problem: the queue for the bridge stacks back along Third Street past the Village shops, and the alternative down the Strand through Imperial Beach and National City adds half an hour. Orange Avenue parking costs nothing and is therefore gone by ten. North Island's gates admit personnel only, so any route an app draws through them is wasted time. The ferry landing lot is small and metered.
Over the bridge to Coronado
Coronado handovers are arranged twenty-four hours ahead: two hours and a quarter from Westchester on the 5, plus whatever the bridge merge is doing on a summer afternoon. Cars are left in the turning circle at the Hotel del, on a Village driveway off Orange Avenue, or at the ferry landing on First Street for guests coming across from the Broadway pier. Can the car be brought onto the naval air station?
No. North Island and the amphibious base are controlled access, and a rental on a civilian plate will not get through the gate without base credentials held by the driver. We hand over off base, at the Hotel del or a Village address, and personnel with their own credentials take the car through the gate themselves.
How long does the drive to downtown San Diego take from Coronado?
Ten minutes over the bridge outside rush hour, twenty-five to thirty when the eastbound queue builds after four. The Strand and the 5 take about forty minutes and only make sense when the bridge is shut. The passenger ferry from First Street is fifteen minutes to the Broadway pier, though the car stays on the island.
What is the minimum rental period?
One day. Daily, weekly and monthly rates, with long stays running month-to-month and no lock-in.
Is a credit card or a credit check required?
