Midweek there is barely any traffic worth the name. Summer Saturdays load the Seaward and California Street offramps, and the surf lot under the pier goes early. Anything heading inland wants to leave before five, or the 33 fills with campers and Ojai traffic coming back down.
Where the Ventura handover happens
PCH ends at Emma Wood and the freeway takes over the shoreline for the last mile into town. That whole run is close to two hours each way from Westchester, so Ventura is scheduled for the following day rather than dropped in same-day. Most handovers happen in the Harbor Village car park, where there is room to walk round the car properly. Which cars work in Ventura
The Ford Bronco is the obvious harbour car: boards fit, sand stops being an argument, and the doors open wide in the Island Packers lot. How far is Ojai up the 33, and is it worth a morning?
Twenty minutes from the freeway the road opens out through Casitas Springs into the valley, so it makes an easy half-day. Park off Ojai Avenue near Libbey Park rather than fighting the arcade frontage. Past Wheeler Gorge the 33 climbs into switchbacks — sealed the whole way, genuinely good driving, and worth an extra hour if the day allows it.
Can I leave the car at Ventura Harbor while I take the Channel Islands ferry?
That is a routine ask. The Island Packers lot takes day parking, and overnights are common for campers crossing to Santa Cruz Island. Keys stay with you — nothing gets handed to the harbour office — and the manager is reachable until nine if a sailing lands late. If you would rather not drive back at all, collection from the harbour can be arranged a day in advance.
